Why August 15?
The date August 15 is celebrated as Independence Day in India to acknowledge the Independence of India from the British rule on that day. India attained Independence largely due to the struggle and sacrifices of various political leaders and social activists.
On 15th August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first Prime Minister of independent India, hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi. It should also be remembered that the Independence day was sadly marked by the partition of India into India and Pakistan.
What is Independence?
The Britishers had ruled over India for a period of more than 200 years and the rule was mainly known for unjust and unethical behaviour of Britisher’s.
This resulted in widespread protests all over the country and various groups started forming to rebel against the British rule. It resulted in a large number of movements such as Non-cooperation movement, Swadeshi movement and Civil Disobedience movement. These movements eventually resulted in the British leaving India and Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru was made the first Prime Minister of Independent India.
